What is E1119?

A lot of people have reached my blog asking me about 1119.

Okay, here's what you need to know about 1119. I don't know much myself but I know these:

1) It's SPM English Essay graded according to British standard. If you get 2A, it means your English is equivalent to grade 2A in British O-Level English paper and you perform better than a British who got a 3C for his O-Level English in the UK. I highly doubt the 1119 grade is strictly according to British standard but that is how it is supposed to be graded and perceived.

2) Grade "6C" is the de facto "passing grade". There is no actual passing grade for 6C. G is considered as a universal failure, true, but normally people take grades higher than 6C as "pass". Most universities overseas will accept 6C as the minimum grade for their English Language Requirements. There are also a lot that don't, so it's best if you check with the university you're interested in. If you get above 6C, you're quite safe. If you get below 6C, get IELTS/TOEFL. If you get 1A, you're good. If you get 7D, you failed.

3) It's a lousy indicator of your English proficiency. Your proficiency in the English language cannot be graded solely based on your essay. Writing is only part of a language. 1119 did not assess your ability in speaking, listening and reading Enlish. You can argue that 1A is going to get your accepted to many universities in the UK, but once you get accepted, you'll suffer greatly. A more reliable English test will be IELTS or TOEFL. To be frank, I believe even MUET grades better than 1119. The only sad thing MUET is not accepted overseas is because MPM is not in any way affiliated to any organisations or parties that are from English-speaking countries, unlike 1119 which is graded by the British Council, supposedly, thus MUET lacks severe credibility as English is not even an official language in Malaysia. So don't get complacent or cocky with a 1A. It's really nothing much to worth being proud of.

4) It's possible 1119 grade is much lower than your SPM English. An A+ in SPM English but 6C in 1119? Don't worry, you're not alone. It's common.

5) Proceeding from Q4, what does that mean then? One thing you need to know is that 1119 and SPM are two entirely separate things. Each of them has no bearings on the other. 1119 will have its individual certificate which you'll get much later than your SPM certificate. 1119 grade is not an independent subject hence it does not affect the number of As you get in your SPM. In fact, as mentioned, 1119 is not even part of SPM. It simply took what was part of SPM out to be graded separately for something entirely different.

6) Is it useful? Well, it depends. Overseas universities may recognise it as a valid English proficiency test, but last I heard, you still need IELTS/TOEFL for student visa application. That being said, even if you've got 1A you may still need to sit for IELTS. You may want to inquire further information about this with the universities you wish to apply for. As for local universities, as long as you're a Malaysian, you MUST take MUET. MUET is by law a mandatory subject for all Malaysians studying in universities on Malaysian soil. Branch campus universities like Monash and Nottingham are the only ones I know that receive exceptions. Other universities, regardless of IPTA or IPTS, are all bound by the law and ergo MUET is mandatory, even if you have taken IELTS/TOEFL. So, in my opinion, 1119 is not very useful. But since it costs nothing, just keep the certificate. If you get 1A, you can flatter yourself by saying the British give you the highest possible grade they have in their system for your English.

7) It has a validity of only two years. Most universities will only accept it as a valid proficiency test within the two years of its release. It is useful if you proceed straight to the UK or any foreign universities after your SPM to undertake pre-university programmes. 1119 will be useful then. But if you take A-Levels or any other equivalent pre-university courses in Malaysia and intend to apply for foreign universities, your 1119 result may by then be invalid, as completing a pre-university course in Malaysia normally requires 2 years which would render 1119 invalid.

Feel free to ask any questions if you have any. I'll do my best to answer them.

I must also stress the facts above may no longer be correct as lots of things have changed since I sat for it. Some basic facts should remain unchanged but others may vary depending on the government's regulations.

  1. I have something want to ask which is not related to the topic above...
Did you apply any scholarship other than the one have been given by your university?? I am a fresh STPM leaver, but it seem that there is only fewer of scholarship available in this year....so I asked this

  2. No, I did not. There were very limited, close to none, scholarships available for Civil Engineering. There are many for mechanical, E&E and chemical but there are almost nil for civil. I had no idea why, perhaps I didn't dig far enough but I didn't really want to dig anyway. Plus, personally, I don't like scholarships with bonds, which many seem to have, so I did not apply any.

  3. So it is an indicator from our spm essay? And we will get the result together with slip spm? Pardon my language lol haha

    ReplyDelete
  4. It is an indicator, just not a reliable one. 1119 result will be stated in your SPM result slip but not in SPM certificate. UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate) will issue a separate certificate for 1119.

  14. You can get GCE-O certificate from your school. It's released usually half a year after you get your SPM result. Sometimes up to a year. It depends on your region I guess.

  15. Hi there. Regarding the expiry date of this 1119, is it starting from the day we sit for the exam or the day we get our result?

  17. Thinkquanauts: It's possible. I can't remember haha. 1119 is quite useless for me because I sat for form 6 and MUET superseded it.

    Please tell me thank you:)

  25. afiq asyraaf: Hi, 5C is considered decent but there is room for improvements. The de facto passing grade is 6C so you are considered to have passed 1119. However it would mean you need to brush up your English more.

Tinta Soliloquy: 8E means your English is poor, and is considered 'fail'.

  28. Unknown: I do not think an appeal is necessary but while an error might be commmitted (1119 should not be higher than SPM), an A is still a very good result. Besides, since 1119 is graded based solely on your essay, it is possible you made mistakes in other parts that could cause lower grade.

Anonymous: 4B is okay. Quite good.

  38. Amira: Even if you got 1A, it still means there is still room for improvement. SPM or 1119 grades show only what you should get for your current level of education, but as you climb up the ladder, so should your achievement.

    ReplyDelete
  43. YQ Sia: Sorry for late reply. 1119 certificate is issued separately and a few months later than SPM certificate. I suppose you can apply for a replacement statement (don't think you can get an original certificate copied), but I am quite sure a fee will be charged.

  44. hey daanny ive some questions to ask ? first why did u say that English 1119 is not very useful? is it useful or not ? is it worth it to brigthen my future if i take the exam? what is IELTS? can english 1119 transform me to university overseas?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Unknown: 1119 is basically your SPM English paper marked to different British standards. It's not a separate exam, just a separate grade. As long as you sit for SPM English, you'll get a grade for it. It doesn't worth a lot because, while overseas universities may recognise it as a qualified English Language grade, you'll still need IELTS/TOEFL for your student visas in many countries. Besides, 1119 is marked based solely on your essay. Obviously, an essay is a very poor reflective of one's English language proficiency. Hence, I say it is not useful, not reliable, and not trustworthy.
IELTS is an international English Language Proficiency Test that is universally recognised (limited in US, which prefers TOEFL). Overseas universities would demand you to get a minimum of 6.5 for IELTS as a proof that you are proficient in English. It is usually a requirement you must fulfil, so you'll most likely have to take it if you plan to go overseas. But in Malaysia, MUET takes precedence over IELTS, because Malaysia enacted a law that makes MUET compulsory for all university students in Malaysia. So even if you have IELTS, you'll still need MUET.

  48. Hi danny, if my GCE IS 6c, is it mean that my essay skill is poor?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, it certainly means there's still room for improvement, but it doesn't necessarily mean poor. In an international context, to be honest Malaysian has demonstrated rather advanced proficiency in English. Because what they care is that the message must be sent. If your English is good enough for your reader to understand what you're trying to say, basically you're good enough to them. That's why foreigners are impressed by Malaysian's English proficiency, because in SEA region, Thais, Burmese and Vietnamese generally can't speak a single proper English sentence but we can. But of course, don't be complacent. It's better to have good English with good proficiency, proper grammar and fluent speaking skills.

  50. Hi Danny, I'm from a private Chinese secondary school. My question is nowhere related to the 1119 test, but I do get a 1A from it. And I'd like to ask, is 2A+,4A,1A-,3B+ a considerable result for major scholarships applications? If so, should I apply for the pre-u programmes or further my study down SUEC path?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a decent result, but probably tough for major scholarships applications. Try to apply anyway, it's hard to tell now. My advice is apply for everything you can find, then decide when some of them respond. It's always worth trying something because it doesn't cost a dime and you don't lose anything. Good luck!

  52. Hi danny, i hope that u can give some explaination about the gceo grade... I try to apply scholarship but they requires me to fill the spm result form that include gceo grade but the option is only in numbering which is 1 until 5... What should i choose if i got 8E/E8 in my GCEO ?? Hope that u can help me

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's possible that if your grade is lower than 5, then you're not eligible for the application. Just try it out and write 8E anyway, and see what turns out. It doesn't hurt to try and you won't lose anything. But 8E is generally an unfavourable result and indicative of poor proficiency, so if you intend to go overseas, my advice is brush up your English and give TOEFL/IELTS a try. There's always a second chance.

  53. What about 4B ? Is it safe for applying english related course ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To apply English-related courses, I believe IELTS/TOEFL/MUET would be a requirement and hence 1119 would not be important. However, it also depends on the university. A 4B definitely means there's still room for improvement, but I'm sure it isn't the end of it. Good luck.

  54. May i know the level of 1119?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nobody knows. It's said to be the equivalent of GCE O-Level English as marked in the UK but nobody knows exactly the cutting points for some grades or the marking scheme. As for the grades breakdown (1A, 2A so on), just google it. There are lots of answers out there. I have been made to understand the grade has changed since I last took it.

  55. Hi Danny my grade is 8E. So, I have to take IETS?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfortunately, yes. Any grades below 6C is deemed to be unsatisfactory and fails to meet any standard English qualification and consequently IELTS/TOEFL is required. For Malaysia, please do note MUET is compulsory even if you've taken IELTS/TOEFL.

  57. Hello Danny. I got A+ for english and 1A for CGE-O but as I know myself better, my proficiency in english is not too good. So, should I apply for foreign university or better I enrolled in foundation programme first for a year and enhance my english, then apply for foreign university. Is my Cge-o still valid at that moment. I really helpless right now. I m confusing

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi there,
If you intend to apply for foreign university, usually TOEFL or IELTS, both of which are internationally recognised English proficiency test, will be required and your English proficiency will be more meticulously analysed and tested. You can be rest assured, foreign universities do not accept students without sufficient proficiency and if they want to accept you, it's one thing they ensure you are good at.
So my advice is you should not be worried about what grade you get for your GCE-O or SPM English. Go for IELTS/TOEFL (take note, the results are valid for only 2 years so you shouldn't sit them if you do not yet intend to apply), and then worry about the rest later. Cross the bridge only when you come to it ya!
As for now, congratulations for the results!

    1. Depending on which countries you go. Some universities may be satisfied with the grade, but you might need IELTS/TOEFL to obtain a student visa as stipulated by the country's immigration. The university usually will advise you on that.
